 ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist, I am drawn to the imaginative worlds we create when we allow ourselves to play, explore, and reconnect with our inner child. Much of my work centers on The Hissyfits and The Misfits—a collection of whimsical, soft-sculpture characters that blend childhood innocence with the expressive language of animals. Each creation embodies a distinct personality or emotional state—mischief, shyness, bravery, joy—represented through the unique bonnets they wear. These traits offer viewers a glimpse into the inner identities and emotions we all carry, regardless of age.

The characters resonate deeply with children and young adults, but they also speak to adults who long for wonder, comfort, and imaginative connection. Through their dreamlike presence and relatable qualities, I invite viewers into a world that reflects both the challenges and the excitement of being human. My favorite moments as an artist are watching people’s eyes light up when they encounter these characters for the first time—there is always a spark of nostalgia, recognition, or pure joy.

My creative process embraces the beauty of mistakes and the magic of wandering without a strict destination. I believe that allowing space for experimentation leads to unexpected discoveries—both in art-making and within ourselves.

Ultimately, my work encourages viewers to honor their quirks, celebrate their uniqueness, and reconnect with the playful parts of themselves. In their gentle way, The Hissyfits and The Misfits remind us that emotional expression, imagination, and individuality are not only allowed—they are essential.
